Overview

Cadell Last explores the relationship between evolutionary and systems approaches and contemporary continental philosophy. Drawing on Hegel, Lacan, Žižek and his books Global Brain Singularity and Systems and Subjects, the conversation addresses online philosophical communities, meta-science, disaster communism, the Hegel–Darwin relationship, quantum gravity and Christian atheism.

Description

What might emerge from bringing evolutionary theory and systems thinking into dialogue with Hegel and Lacan? Cadell Last has followed that question through books such as Global Brain Singularity and Systems and Subjects. A Canadian philosopher whose path led from evolutionary anthropology at the University of Toronto to the Global Brain Institute in Brussels under Francis Heylighen and the Bertalanffy Center in Vienna, Cadell explains why Žižek's encounter between Hegel and Lacan became more compelling to him than Habermas.

Our discussion travels through the online philosophy communities surrounding his Philosophy Portal, Žižek's return to Hegel and disaster communism, and Cadell's ideas about a meta horizon and meta science. We consider the Žižek–Peterson debate, Adrian Johnston, the unfinished encounter between Hegel and Darwin, quantum gravity and Peirce, before closing on Peter Rollins and Cadell's position between Christian atheism and Hegel's spirit science.
