Overview
An exploration of integral theory’s intellectual history and its possible relationship to left-wing politics, through Jeremy D. Johnson’s work on Jean Gebser and his exchanges with Michael Brooks. Subjects include alternative integral communities, media ecology, complexity theory, ecological politics and the prospects for cosmopolitan socialism.
Description
Could integral thinking help the left see beyond its usual political boundaries? That hope was part of Michael Brooks's interest in the work of Jeremy D. Johnson, my guest for this conversation. Jeremy, founder of the Mutations community and a scholar of Jean Gebser, recalls knowing Brooks through online integral circles and hearing from him during the Jordan Peterson and Intellectual Dark Web moment. He traces his own journey from sociology at Fordham under Heather Gautney to Goddard College, and his departure from a more corporate Ken Wilber movement around the time of Occupy.
Our conversation reaches beyond the history of integral theory into Fred Turner's account of counterculture and cyberculture, media ecology, Jeremy's writing on Gebser, Edgar Morin's complexity thinking and integral ecology at CIIS. Climate, the war in Ukraine, the religious and Canadian lefts, and the prospects for cosmopolitan socialism bring these threads together.
