Overview

Ryan Nakade discusses political polarization and meta-ideological approaches to disagreement in relation to integral theory, Michael Brooks and the contemporary left. The conversation considers postmodern conservatism, the online right, gender divisions in political identification, and religious resources for cross-ideological engagement, including stoicism and the Catholic Worker tradition.

Description

Ryan Nakade's political journey has taken him from Ron Paul libertarianism toward Bernie Sanders and a search for ways across entrenched ideological divides. As a mediator, facilitator and co-host of Meta-Ideological Politics with Nate Kaufman, he brings a practical perspective to our discussion of Michael Brooks, integral theory and the future of political disagreement. We recall encountering Ken Wilber's work as teenagers, while Ryan describes discovering Brooks first as a critic of the Intellectual Dark Web and later through Jeremy Johnson's Mutations podcast.

What might meta-ideological politics offer beyond another map of political positions? We consider Matt McManus's account of postmodern conservatism, the left's response to the new right, and gender polarization among working-class men. The conversation also takes us through stoicism, the Catholic Worker movement, the religious left, and Ryan's engagement with Paul Tillich and Simone Weil from a Zen Buddhist family background.
