Overview
A consideration of liberalism’s capacity to reconcile individual freedom with community, meaning and social belonging. Victor Bruzzone discusses liberal rights, dignified self-authorship and the capabilities approach alongside critiques from the new right. The conversation extends to cosmopolitanism, religion, Canadian political culture and debates about political identity.
Description
Liberalism promises freedom, but can it also provide the community and meaning people seek? Victor Bruzzone raises that tension through his essay Liberalism and Its Discontents, written as an introduction to Matt McManus's A Critical Legal Examination of Liberalism and Liberal Rights. A philosopher from Ottawa and co-host of the Pillpod, Victor considers whether dignified self-authorship and the capabilities approach can respond to dissatisfaction with liberal neutrality. We discuss religion, discipline and flourishing through our different backgrounds, as well as the friendships at York University from which the Pillpod emerged.
Our conversation moves from the new right and Adrian Vermeule's common-good constitutionalism to integral theory, Michael Brooks and the contested idea of cosmopolitanism. We finish closer to home: Quebec, bilingualism, the Trudeaus, Victor's cosmopolitan outlook, American democracy and Canada's culture of pragmatic compromise.
