Overview

An interdisciplinary discussion of integral ecology, Catholic social and ecological thought, and cosmopolitics. Sam Mickey traces connections among Thomas Berry, the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology, Laudato si’, Leonardo Boff and the Catholic left. The conversation also considers Donna Haraway, Isabelle Stengers, regenerative agriculture, bioregional politics and ecological democracy.

Description

What happens when ecological thought encounters theology, political theory and the lived traditions of religion? Sam Mickey has spent much of his work exploring those crossings. Teaching at the University of San Francisco and working with the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology, he joins me to recount a path through environmental ethics at the University of North Texas, ecopsychology and psychedelic studies at CIIS, and the influence of Mary Evelyn Tucker, John Grim and Brian Swimme. We also revisit integral ecology, Ken Wilber's tensions with CIIS, Thomas Berry and The Variety of Integral Ecologies.

Our discussion moves from Sam's Catholicism and Donna Haraway's sacramental resonances to Laudato si’, Leonardo Boff and the Catholic left in the Global South. Cosmopolitics opens further questions about Isabelle Stengers, regenerative farming, Jason Wirth's bioregional politics, ecological democracy, Žižek and the anthology Dancing with Sophia.
