Overview

Sean Kelly reviews the intellectual formation of transpersonal psychology and its connections with German idealism, Jungian psychology and integral theory. The discussion encompasses Hegel and Jung, the history of ReVision and Ken Wilber in Dialogue, Edgar Morin’s complexity thought, and the emergence of integral ecology in response to planetary environmental crises.

Description

Hegel and Jung are seldom brought into the same conversation without some explanation. For Sean Kelly, their intellectual kinship became the subject of a dissertation after his mentor John Dourley drew his attention to it. Sean, now teaching in the Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness program at CIIS, looks back on his beginnings in literature, the Jung Society of Ottawa, a meeting with Richard Tarnas in Prague, and the making of Ken Wilber in Dialogue from two issues of ReVision co-edited with Donald Rothberg.

We explore transpersonal psychology's origins at the end of the counterculture and Sean's comparison with the rise of German idealism. His Catholic upbringing and time in Paris with Edgar Morin lead into complexity, politics and ecological thought. The conversation closes on the planetary crisis through Thomas Berry, Leonardo Boff, Pope Francis's encyclical, Joanna Macy and Naomi Klein.
