Overview
An examination of methodological disputes in religious studies and Jason Ā. Josephson Storm’s proposal for metamodernist theory. Themes include the construction and use of religious categories, process social kinds, new materialism, insider–outsider knowledge and value neutrality. The discussion also considers Japanese religious history, Robert Bellah, human flourishing and the politics of theory.
Description
What if debates about religion have been trapped by the very categories used to conduct them? Jason Ā. Josephson Storm raises that possibility in Metamodernism: The Future of Theory, and our conversation marks the podcast's first anniversary. Jason explains why he adopted the term “metamodernism” late in writing the book and traces earlier research at Stanford under Bernard Faure that became The Invention of Religion in Japan. His memories of Zen Buddhist and Jewish relatives, Tassajara and Critical Buddhism lead us toward Robert Bellah's work on Japan and religious evolution.
We take up Jason's account of process social kinds and his argument that both universalists and critics of the category of religion have reached a dead end. From there we consider new materialism, insider and outsider perspectives, value neutrality and theosophy's history in religious studies. We finish with popular metamodernism, human flourishing, the left and religion, Slavoj Žižek and Jason's prospective work on genealogy.
