Overview
An account of religious-studies education and intellectual life in Canada and North America through Francis X. Charet’s experiences at Dawson College, McGill, the University of Ottawa and Goddard College. The discussion considers progressive educational models, Jungian scholarship, spirituality, transpersonal psychology, Charles Taylor and the professional conditions facing scholars of religion.
Description
From Dawson College's New School to Goddard College in Vermont, Francis X. Charet's academic journey opens a window onto the history of religious studies in Canada. A Montréal-based scholar who spent more than two decades at Goddard developing its consciousness studies concentration, Francis recounts a pre-Vatican II Catholic childhood, encounters with the counterculture, travels through India, Central Asia and Israel, and studies at McGill and the University of Ottawa. He also explains Goddard's Deweyan emphasis on knowing, being and doing—and the pressures faced by small progressive colleges.
Carl Jung provides another thread through the conversation. We discuss Francis's path toward Jung, Harold Coward's role in the publication of his work on spiritualism, and the later appearance of Jung's Red Book and seminars. We then turn to Charles Taylor, Hegel's uneven reception among Jungians, Ken Wilber and transpersonal psychology, and the shortage of academic posts in Canada.
